    Malaysia's natural rubber production increased by 17.7 per cent in January 2022

    The Department of Statistics, Malaysia today released Monthly Rubber Statistics, Malaysia, January 2022. This publication consists of statistics on production, imports, exports, domestic consumption, stocks, prices, number of employees, salaries & wages, and productivity of rubber estates.

    Natural rubber production increased by 17.7 percent in January 2022 (49,087 tonnes) as compared to December 2021 (41,690 tonnes). The year-on-year comparison showed that the production increased by 7.3 percent (January 2021: 45,735 tonnes). The production of natural rubber in January 2022 for Malaysia was mainly contributed by the smallholders sector (89.1%) as compared to the estates sector (10.9%).

    Total stocks of natural rubber increased 8.7 percent in January 2022 to 310,052 tonnes as compared to 285,245 tonnes in December 2021. Rubber processors factory was contributing 92.3 per cent of the stocks followed by rubber consumers factory (7.6%) and rubber estates (0.1%).

    Exports of Malaysia's natural rubber amounted to 51,158 tonnes in January 2022, increased by 11.3 per cent as against December 2021 (45,982 tonnes). P.R. China continued to dominate as the highest importer of natural rubber with 37.7 per cent from total exports in January 2022 followed by United States of America (7.0%), Finland (3.8%), Germany (3.3%) and Iran (3.2%). The exports performance was contributed by natural rubber-based product such as gloves, tyre, tube, rubber thread and condom. Gloves were the main exports of rubber-based products with a value of RM2.2 billion in January 2022, a decrease of 7.6 per cent as compared to December 2021 (RM2.3 billion).

    Analysis of the average monthly price showed that Latex Concentrated recorded an increase of 6.0 per cent (January 2022: 572.08 sen per kg, December 2021: 539.45 sen per kg) and Scrap 3.2 per cent (January 2022: 603.05 sen per kg, December 2021:   584.07 sen per kg). A similar trend is also observed for all Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R) which increased between 2.9 to 6.0 per cent. The movement of global prices as reported by World Bank Commodity Price Data also showed that the prices for TSR 20 (Technically Specified Rubber) and SGP/MYS (Singapore/Malaysia) type increased         3.3 per cent (from USD1.72/kg to USD1.78/kg) and 2.7 per cent (from USD1.92/kg to USD1.97/kg) respectively. Based on Malaysian Rubber Board Digest report released in January 2022, the recovery in the market driven by encouraging global manufacturing activities and firmer advice from regional rubber futures markets from bargain-hunting activities. At the same time, tighter global natural rubber supply, surging crude oil prices and the ringgit that remained weak against the United States of America dollar.
