IMF maintains China’s growth forecast at 4.5% for 2026

The International Monetary Fund has kept its economic growth forecast for China unchanged at 4.5% for 2026, according to its annual review of the Chinese economy for 2025 published on Wednesday.

Despite maintaining the forecast, the IMF highlighted potential risks facing the world’s second-largest economy, specifically pointing to weak domestic demand and a slowing global economy as key concerns.

During a press conference in Beijing in December, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva revealed she had encouraged Chinese policymakers to make what she called the "brave choice" of accelerating structural reform.

She also emphasized the need for China to reduce its $19 trillion economy’s dependence on exports.

Georgieva’s comments came at the conclusion of the Fund’s discussions with the Chinese government regarding the 2025 report, which formed the basis for the current economic assessment.
